A Midwest Nuclear Power Plant: One Change Reaps Big Savings

Challenge
A Midwest nuclear power plant was stuck: normally, they transported contaminated soil to waste treatment facilities in metal containers known as a B-25 boxes, rated for 96 cubic feet of material. But this time they needed to move three million pounds. With long production lead times and an accompanying high cost, the metal box method simply wasn’t an economical choice, failing to fit into their maintenance budget and causing scheduling problems.

Solution
PacTec was contacted by a remediation company, along with the project manager from the nuclear plant, for solution options. We delivered a patented 242 cubic foot IP1 (Industrial Packaging group 1) soft-sided LiftPac™. The plant received the shipping containers in a more timely fashion, and at 50% less cost, than their usual metal counterparts. And because the LiftPac can be packaged 20 to a pallet, the client saved 15-20% on shipping. An additional bonus: the remediation company increased the output of shipments, thanks to our innovative zipper closure and one-piece unit, both easier to use than other soft-sided containers. The end result? Significant cost savings that could only come from using the innovative LiftPac instead of traditional metal boxes.
